When Elizabeth Hanson arrives at the Indian fort, the story of her incessant discomforts and “sore trials” breaks to admit a moment of reflection. Here the voice is not enthusiastic, visionary, or prophetic, though her suffering is great. In contrast to the ecstatic experiences registered by Quaker women who underwent sufferings for their faith, Hanson’s experiences under duress are self-negating and fearful. “Her” narration displays only concern for her children and the difficulty she has in maintaining a properly resigned state of mind:
